Cibulák – Blue Onion Porcelain

In 1995, while visiting family in the Czech Republic, I was inundated with beautiful crystal and porcelain at every turn.  Shops lined the streets a few blocks from my grandmother’s apartment and although I knew I wanted to purchase something, I wasn’t entirely sure what I should buy.  A family friend’s mother introduced me to Cibulák (Blue Onion Porcelain aka Zwiebelmuster) and then began an addiction like no other.  She had a beautiful collection, displayed in a rustic red cabinet and sideboard.  She explained to me that the original blue onion porcelain is made by Český Porcelán in Dubí, although there are other companies that copy-cat the dinnerware.  What sets this particular porcelain apart, she explained, was that the blue onion pattern was placed directly on the bisque porcelain before glazing.  [Click here for a fascinating video on the entire production process.]  I enjoyed many meals with my friend’s family and his mother proudly used her Cibulák collection every single day.

I started my Cibulák collection with a coffee service for six, purchased for roughly $100, a large sum of money for a recent college graduate.  I carefully packed it and brought it home on the plane.  Proudly displayed in my simple white cabinet, I knew I wanted to add more.  The only problem:  it’s not easily found in the United States.  I scoured eBay and over time, have added many pieces to my collection.  I’ve also received a few pieces from my dear family friend in the Czech Republic, those of which I cherish.  After 20 years of collecting, I have finally completed a dinner service for ten – ten flat plates, soup plates, dessert plates, coffee cups, saucers, and bowls.  I’ve also added many platters, bowls, decorative pieces, and my most sought-after soup toureen.  While most of my Cibulák was purchased from eBay, my dinner service was completed because of a recent purchase from a phenomenal porcelain shop in Prague – Dům Porcelánu.  Because of my recent Cibulák additions, I decided to move some of my blue onion collection out of the dining room and merge it into my kitchen.  I had so much crammed into one china cabinet and couldn’t truly enjoy its beauty.  We, like my wonderful Czech friend’s mother, try to use this porcelain every single day.

I too am a collector of Cibulak. Being of Czech decent, I was started on the collection at a young age by my mother who would bring it home from her trips to the “old country”. I agree with you, it is hard to find the original here in the states. I do mix my collection w/ some from antique stores, yard sales, etc. The hunt for the next perfect piece is always fun. So glad I found your web page.

Hi, Marcella! Thanks for stopping by. :) I absolutely love this porcelain. I just recently found a store in Prague that ships the porcelain to the US for a reasonable price:

      Dům Porcelánu

I received my first order from them about a week ago and was able to complete my place settings for 10. They pack everything extremely well, too. I was so impressed with them that I placed another order a few days ago — I bought a wall clock and a few other decorative pieces. They have so much to choose from!
